All about Cliff...
Cliff Ayers started singing in Europe during World War II while serving in the US Army. He sang in musicals and also with big bands including Tony Pastor, Jimmy Dorsey, and George Auld as a special guest. After the war, he went to New York and appeared in the last phase of Vaudeville on the Leows circuit. Cliff sang in nightclubs like "Leon and Eddies", "The Copa", and many clubs coast to coast.
During this time, Cliff recorded for Rainbow Records with the song "Rain is the Teardrops of Angels" written by Bernie Wayne who also wrote "Blue Velvet". Rainbow Records was mentioned in the recently released hit movie "Dreamgirls". Cliff also recorded for Jubilee Records whose label included Liberace. "I'll Wait For You" became a hit on Jubilee then Decca Records bought the master and released it worldwide. Cliff then recorded "Chances Are" and other hits on Decca.
While singing in clubs in New York, Cliff was hired by Sammy Kay while appearing at the famous "Astor Roof Hotel" on Broadway. He recorded "It's All In the Game" with Sammy on Columbia Records and it sold a million copies. Cliff left Sammy to sing solo on Decca Records and do television in its early years. A producer saw Cliff at a club and cast him with Eva Marie Saint in a TV show on NBC called "Campus Hoopia". Television aired only in the evenings at the time. After that television show, Art Mooney hired Cliff to sing "Honestly" with him on MGM records and that record became a major hit.
Shortly afterwards, Cliff stopped singing nationwide and returned home to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he married and had a daughter, Tessa, and three sons. There he produced and was host of a TV show on the CBS affiliate WANE called "Breakfast In Fort Wayne". During this time, he ran for State Representative and led the ticket to be nominated. Cliff started a paper called "The Music City Entertainer". Then after a divorce, Cliff relocated in Nashville, Tennessee, where he revitalized his record companies, Emerald Records and American Sound, which he had started in 1950s in New York. Cliff continued operation of his paper which is now celebrating its 31st year in publication.
Presently, Cliff produces a show, "Record Row Review", which is in its 11th year on television. He records singers from around the world on his labels and also records his own songs. Music Town Distributors sends the records worldwide. A prolific artist, he continues to record, sing, and travel all over the world. His new CD compilation will soon be released.
After many decades in the recording business, Cliff was inducted into "The Big Band Hall of Fame" in Palm Beach, Florida. He has always said, "Stick around long enough and it will come to you!" And indeed, it did.
